UK scientists issued an urgent Deltacron update as there are fears of a deadly new mutation. The so-called Deltacron variant was identified by professor Leonidas Kostrikis, head of the Cypriot laboratory of biotechnology and molecular virology. After analyzing samples in his lab, he suggested that two variants of the virus had amalgamated. However, after further scrutiny British scientists have urged caution, advising that the new find is likely to be a result of lab contamination rather than a variant.
Dr.Thomas Peacock, a research associate at Imperial College London’s department of infectious disease, said he and several colleagues had looked at the available sequences and determined it is almost definitely contamination and doesn’t look like a real variant. However, The Omicron variant and Delta variant are real and were not caused by laboratory contamination, according to the scientist in Cyprus who identified it.
Dr. Kostrikis went on to say that the virus is more common among patients hospitalized with COVID-19 than among non-hospitalized patients which refutes reports that it is the result of technical error. Ministers are considering reducing the self-isolation period for fully vaccinated individuals who test positive for Covid-19, the UK Prime Minister has confirmed.
This new variant is a merger of Delta & Omicron and it is becoming dangerous with many cases found in the UK. According to UKHAS, it is being taken care of so there is no need to panic about it for now. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: There is a similar argument to be had about the quarantine period- whether to come down to seven days to five days. “The thing to do is to look at the science we are looking at so that we will act according to that”. Boris Johnson has insisted lateral flow tests will remain for as long as needed.
He said, “we are going to have to make sure we continue to use testing at one of our most important lines of defense for as long as is necessary”.
